The story of this hall
It came free. Machine-pressed by the trainload in pink, green, amber, and cobalt, Depression glass rode into American kitchens inside oatmeal boxes, as movie-house dish-night premiums, as the reward for buying flour. The patterns had hopeful names - Cameo, Mayfair, American Sweetheart - and the price was the point: beauty distributed at no charge in years when nothing else was free. A table set in matched pink glass cost nothing but loyalty, and it glowed. Collectors now grade what grocers once gave away. The kitchens are gone; the glass, nearly unbreakable in memory if not in fact, is all here. This hall holds the light, then stops. Turn back.
