A Family's Christmas Tree, 1899

In the late 1800s, Christmas trees were still a relatively new tradition in American homes, brought by German immigrants and gradually adopted by families across the country. For the Keppler family, photographing their decorated tree was a way to mark the holiday and preserve a cherished moment. This image shows us what mattered most to an ordinary household at the turn of the century.
